GREAT DECISIONS NEVER AGE
Here's a hand from the Eau Claire Regional in 2016.  Mike Cassel [Roseville] was sitting in 4th seat with a 3-loser hand - and his vulnerable LHO opened 2♣.  Check out the hand to the right to see Mike's decision making process - and ultimate sacrifice to save a match on one hand.

RAMBLING RIVER RUDIMENTARY RESULTS
Mankato is hosting their "Rambling River Sectional" this weekend, and with the first day of play in the books saw 25 tables in play (that's not bad at all for a first-time outstate sectional).  This afternoon, it was Ryan Johnson [North Mankato] and William Anderson [Mankato] coming in 1st place in the Open Pairs; this morning went to Gerald Gray [Prior] and Barbara Gray [Prior].  On the Non-Life Master side of things, Lars Christensen [St Paul] and Maclore Christensen [St Paul] tied Erik Johnson [St Paul] and Robyn Johnson [St Paul] for top honors this morning; Doris Hertsgaard [North Mankato] and Carol Ann Frederick [Mankato] came in 1st overall.  The action resumes again tomorrow morning!  You can find all of the results from the Mankato Sectional by clicking here.

SO. . .WHO MIGHT BE NEXT?
Now that Minnesota has a new Platinum Life Master, who might be next to cross the 10,000 masterpoint mark?  Several active Minnesota players are in the hunt, but chances are Peg Waller [Edina] will be wearing that crown for a while.  The nearest player to 10,000 is Brian Crossley [Burnsville], with 8,495 as of the ACBL's September 6 masterpoint cycle.

PEG WALLER GOES PLATINUM

It happened today at 4:59pm.  Peg Waller [Edina] earning 4.00 masterpoints in a single BBO game, scoring a sparkling 69.67% online with long-time partner Ron DeHarpporte [Edina].  (Would she have chosen to cross this line with anyone else!?)  They finished 1st overall out of 126 pairs in the game to send her over the 10,000 masterpoints mark.  Congratulations to Minnesota's newest Platinum Life Master, Peg Waller!  Seriously - Unit 178 better throw a really great party.

OCTOBER CLUB SCHEDULES
There might not be quite as much going on in October as there has been this month, but there's still plenty of opportunities for masterpoints (and lots of them, at that).  September this year is a tough act to follow - but the Autumn Harvest Sectional comes at the end of the month of October, and the D14 NAP Online BBO Finals take place the first weekend.  That's in addition to all of the Club Appreciation Games at your local club next month!  Here's a look at the schedules for Minnesota bridge clubs as October gets going.  (ED: We have not yet received any calendar from Unit 178.)

September 24 2024
D14 NAP FINAL REGISTRATION DUE OCT 1
Speaking of the D14 NAP Finals, you've got one week left to send in your information and check.  Keith Thompson [Bloomington] will happily take your check and info so you will be able to earn some gold points the weekend of October 4/5 on BBO.  Here is what you need to send:
    - Both player's names
    - Each player's ACBL number
    - Each player's BBO username
    - The flight (A, B, or C) for which you are registering
    - A check for the entry fee payable to:
          District 14 ACBL
          c/o Keith Thompson
8624 Crest Road  Bloomington MN  55425
All of the registration details can be found by clicking here.  With 557 Minnesota players having qualified for the NAP this year, we're looking for a terrific turnout.

September 24 2024
WHAT ABOUT THE IN-PERSON OPTION?
Over the past 52 weeks, online play has almost completely gone by the wayside.  The average weekly percent of Minnesota bridge club tables that are in person the past 52 weeks stands at 93.6%.  (And it's been above 90% every week of the past 52.)  Just two Minnesota clubs (Rochester and the Minn Grand Slam Club) offer online play on any regular basis, and even then, the average tables in play online for their games is 3.16 tables in Rochester and 4.75 tables for the MGSC.

So when it comes to special games (like the NAP and GNT finals, for example), why does D14 have them online?  It's true that more players can play from the comfort of their homes (and not travel) with online play, but do they come out in bigger numbers?  Attendance for these special events when held online would suggest maybe not:

Since moving to BBO, the total number of tables in D14's NAP and GNT competitions has shrunk considerably.  This is despite the argument that was offered that "more people will play online rather than travel".  To be fair, there are fewer bridge players in general in the post-COVID world - but with bridge being a social game, after all, might a change in D14 policy be in the works?  We will see who shows up at the D14 NAP Finals online next month - but for now, be sure to let your club manager (or better yet, D14 representative) know what you think.

THE ACBL's 5/5/5 PROGRAM. . .AND YOU
The ACBL changed the way they reimburse Units this past year, to their "5/5/5" program.  (Details on the program can be found by clicking here.)  So how are Minnesota's bridge units doing with the new format?  The report for the 2nd quarter of 2024 is out, with both Units gaining new players - and losing some older ones.  Each of the Units received money from the ACBL, with Unit 103 getting a little more than under the old reimbursement program, and Unit 178 getting a bit less.  But the ACBL just sent out an email detailing some "fine-tuning" of their reimbursement program, which should make it easier for ACBL Units (including ours in Minnesota) to qualify for funds.  Those changes will take place starting in October of this year.

The bottom line is that everyone needs to keep working hard in reaching out to members whose membership has lapsed, as well as recruiting and maintaining newer players.  Hopefully the newer ACBL targets coming up in the 4th quarter will also help.

MINNESOTA NAP UNIT FINAL RESULTS - UPDATE
Minnesota's North American Pairs Unit Final was held today at the Bridge Center of St Paul, and it was quite the get-together.  14 tables of players played bridge, with red and gold masterpoints for everyone who scratched.  Here are your finishers in today's bridgefest:

Such fun - we may have to do this again next year!  And whether you played in this Unit NAP Final or not, having qualified at the club level this summer still qualifies you to play in the D14 NAP Finals which get going the first weekend of October online.  The Conditions of Contest state that you are eligible to play in the D14 Finals as long as you qualified at the club level, so we hope to see many more of you playing online starting October 5th.  For the details of how to enter the D14 NAP Finals, click here.  (You must submit your information and entry fee by October 1st!)  UPDATE:  Individual scores and results from Saturday's game are available by clicking here.

MANKATO TOURNAMENT NEXT WEEKEND
Part of this year's "Big September" in Minnesota includes a sectional tournament in Mankato.  The Rambling River Sectional gets going Saturday and Sunday of next weekend - the flyer is to the right.  Silver points are on the menu at this event, with both pair and team games available for players.  This is the first sectional in Mankato in many years, so you know they are going to do things right.  The drive to Mankato should be beautiful as well, with the leaves changing a bit late this year!

September 20 2024
BIG RED AND GOLD POINTS TOMORROW
Tomorrow is the day for this year's Minnesota Unit NAP Final.  A two-session event starting at 10am, lots of red and gold points will be available to players at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Roseville location.  No word on the number of wheelbarrows available to cart those masterpoints out the door, but players can play in any of three different flights (Open, 0-2500 masterpoints, and 0-500 masterpoints).  The cake has been ordered.  Hopefully we will see you tomorrow in Roseville!

September 19 2024
PEG WALLER ABOUT TO GO PLATINUM
She's got 8.09 masterpoints to go.  Going over the 10,000 masterpoint mark could easily take place in Saturday's NAP Unit Final at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Roseville location. . .or it could happen in one session at the Mankato Sectional next weekend.  Or maybe at 3am on BBO while under the covers at home!  But as of today, it sure looks like Minnesota's next Platinum Life Master is about to become a reality in the very near future.  And that does call for a party.

September 19 2024
AN UPDATE ON CLUB FACE-TO-FACE PLAY
It sure looks like it is good news.  For the 37-week period from January 1st each year until September 15th, face-to-face club tables here in Minnesota have been on the increase.  That's overall - for the entire state - although what really matters is what is happening at your local club.  But adding up data from the 13 active duplicate bridge clubs across Minnesota, tables are up again in 2024.  And that's not all - club games have been on the increase from year to year as well.  This includes many mentor-mentee games (along with a few more limited masterpoint games at some clubs).  Plus - the average size of the typical club game in Minnesota also continues to grow each year.  Here in 2024, we're up to a 6.65 table-per-game average (that's an increase of +5.4% over the same period in 2023).  While it's generally true that "what goes up" must eventually come down, it appears as though that has yet to take place at most local bridge clubs.

HOPING THE BEST FOR BILL V
Difficult news to report as Bill Voedisch [Marine] has been in the hospital for a week now; a moving tractor wheel crushed his legs and pelvis last Tuesday.  Bill was taken to Regions Hospital, where he has gotten good care and was just moved to the Transitional Care Center at Boutwells Landing in Stillwater.  Laurie Carlson [Marine] provided this update:
"Bill is very grateful for all the prayers and kind words of support from family and friends and looks forward to whatever becomes his normal life.

Partial list of goals: play live bridge again; fly to CA to see the grand daughters; drive that tractor."  - Laurie
We're hoping for the best for Bill with his recovery, and looking forward to seeing him back at the bridge table when he's ready.  In the meantime, visitors are welcome to stop by Boutwells Landing in Stillwater and pay Bill a visit; the address is 13575 58th Street N in Oak Park Heights (you can find directions to the facility by clicking here).  If you'd like to send Bill a get-well card, Laurie asks that you send it to their home address (posted here with her permission) at 14625 Old Guslander Trail North, Marine on St Croix MN 55047.

LOCAL TOURNAMENT PLAYERS TURNING OUT
Minnesota was fortunate to have a second open regional this year; and it looks like it might have been a good decision to allow it.  Looking at tournament tables across the upper Midwest (and comparing them to the same pre-COVID events in 2019), both the Gopher and the Med City Regionals have seen better 2024 comparative table counts than other Midwest tournaments.  This isn't to say it's all Minnesota players at these two events, of course - they each attract players from neighboring states (and farther!).  But when it comes to tournament play, there's no question that Minnesota players are turning out in big numbers (at least for now), and that's good for the game as well as the players.

September 16 2024
ANOTHER SEASON AT THE LAKE WINDS DOWN
Thursday will be the last duplicate bridge game up in Detroit Lakes for another year; the past 20 weeks saw another 231 tables in play up at St Luke's Episcopal Church in DL.  A special thanks to Mary Ann Bond [Fargo] who runs the games up in DL for all those West-Central Minnesota bridge players.  As the snow birds get ready to fly, it's nice to see that even up in Detroit Lakes, the tables-per-game was been on the increase since the big re-opening in 2021.  The return to face-to-face bridge is not just continuing to expand in the Twin Cities metro area, but outstate Minnesota, too.  To your right is a look at the tables-per-game for each summer season in DL since 2021 - and things are growing in the right direction.  (We'll see what takes place next summer.)  Now it's on to raking, shutting up the cabin, and for some of these players heading south for the winter.  (Thankfully still some kitchen bridge games going on and online game availability the rest of the year will be there for those hearty non-snowbirds.)

September 15 2024
SUNDAY NIGHT BRIDGE IS BACK
Keith Connolly [St Paul] is hosting an intermediate bridge lesson tonight at 6pm over at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Roseville location.  Then it's onto a game of bridge!  The BCSP is hosting a Sunday evening bridge game every week now - with a lesson beforehand - so you can get your Sunday bridge fix and on a regular basis.  One week from tonight (Sunday the 22nd) will be a special Potluck Dinner at 5:45pm before the bridge lesson and game - so bring a dish to share (and/or libation) and get in on the fun.  More information on these Sunday evening games can be found on the Bridge Center of St Paul's website by clicking here.

NAP UNIT FINAL PARTY: ONE WEEK FROM TODAY
Next Saturday is the big Unit NAP Final at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Roseville location.  This two-session event starts at 10am, with games at 10am and 2pm.  TONS of red points (and some gold points, too) are available for players who have pre-qualified during the NAP competition at your local club this summer.  The list of NAP qualifiers across Minnesota can be found by clicking here.

Get a partner who has also qualified at the club level and we'll see you next Saturday!

MINNESOTA CLUBS MAKE THE ACBL BULLETIN
Between the Rochester DBC's Alzheimer's Association donations (totalling $6,979) and the St Cloud DBC's "Shortest Day" event back in January (donations of $3,724), each of these clubs was mentioned in the ACBL's October Bulletin.  (The October Bulletin hasn't been officially formalized yet, but you can view the page here.)  The Rochester donation kept it in the "Top 40" ACBL organizations for donations again this year; and remember that every dollar counts (whether it is $1 or $1,000).  Also - you don't have to wait for next year to make a donation to this very worthy cause.  If you're so inclined to make a donation today, click here.

September 13 2024
NEW FALL BEGINNING BRIDGE COURSE
The St Cloud DBC has scheduled a beginning bridge class starting in October.  For six Mondays (6pm to 8pm), October 7 through November 18, each session will include a lesson followed by coached play.  (You will be able to play a hand of bridge at your very first lesson!)  In addition - they're providing a light supper beforehand.

You can register for this course by emailing Scott Krupke [Little Falls] at krupkebridge-at-gmail-dot-com or by visiting the Sartell Community Center website.  It sounds like a great introduction to the game of bridge, so if you know someone who might be interested, here's your chance to get them involved!

A GAME THAT'S HARD TO BEAT
76.64%!

Friday night's 7-table open game in St Cloud saw Shirley Richardson [St Joseph] and Scott Richardson [St Joseph] earn a huge game of 76.64%.  Of the 28 boards they played, 8 were outright top boards, and another 7 were tied for the top matchpoint award on the board - look for their names to be in an upcoming ACBL Bulletin soon.

MINNESOTA PLAYERS DOMINATE D14 ACBL-WIDE GAME
The ACBL held their second ACBL-wide game of the year on Wednesday (this time to benefit the International Fund) - and among D14 clubs, it was a couple of Minnesota players that came in 1st overall in the District.  Greg Caucutt [Rochester] and Matt Belau [Rochester] took the top prize in the District of 10.00 masterpoints for their efforts - the full results for the game can be found by clicking here.

There are a few more of these special games coming up in 2024 - the schedule can be found by clicking here.  If your local club is not running these games - ask your local club to sign up as a participating club so you can get in on the action.

MED CITY REGIONAL TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS

Carole Mataya [Rochester] is the 2024 Med City Regional Tournament Champion!  Carole played throughout the tournament with three different partners, earning 54.70 masterpoints over the six-day affair.  (Playing with her regular partner Greg Caucutt [Rochester] got her 51+ of those 54.70 points!)  Congratulations to Carole on an honor so well-deserved.

The Non-Life Master Tournament Champion from this year's Med City Regional is Sarah Wahl [Minneapolis], who not only earned 36.24 masterpoints to best the rest of the Non-Life Master field, but she also became a Life Master at the tournament as well!

. . .AND ANOTHER ONE CROSSES A RED LINE
Well, a ruby-red line, anyway!  A special shout-out to Sue Greenberg [Byron], who became a Ruby Life Master this week at the Rochester Med City Regional.  Well done, Sue!  (Most of you know Sue as the Club Manager at the Rochester DBC, and in addition is the Unit 103 President.)

Day 5 of 6 at the tournament saw another 47 tables in play, with Robyn Johnson [St Paul] and Erik Johnson [St Paul] coming in 1st in today's Gold Rush pairs.  The Open pairs was championed by Ben Kristensen [Duluth] and Kyra Helmbold [Minneapolis].  And today's Bracketed Swiss team of Sandy Fisher [Long Lake], Paul Meerschaert [Long Lake], Dave Collins [Fridley] and Danny Collins [Fridley] took the top award there.  One more day to go before the bidding boxes are put away.

MEET MINNESOTA'S NEWEST LIFE MASTER
John Miller [Rochester] became Minnesota's Newest Life Master at the Med City Regional tournament in Rochester this week - and that title lasted all of 18 hours!

Here's Sarah Wahl [Minneapolis], who played in the TH/F Knockout with teammates Jackson Wahl [Minneapolis], Peter Bock [Apple Valley], and Bev Meyer [Minneapolis], getting to the semi-finals to score more than 17 Gold points and put her over the top - to become Minnesota's LATEST "Newest Life Master"!  The next time you see Sarah at the table, be sure to give her a thumbs up.

HAPPY HAPPY AT THE MED CITY REGIONAL - DAY 3

Turned 80
Rod Morlock

Turned 71
Bob Balderson

NEW Ruby LM
Jim Schnepf

NEW LIFE MASTER
John Miller
Meanwhile - back at the table - it was Joe Koester [Brooklyn Park] and Gary Knippenberg [Golden Valley] who came in 1st overall in the Open Pairs today, earning 28.44 masterpoints:

Tables on day 3 at the tournament came in at 79.5 in play - that's 64.8% of the day 3 tables five years ago (and best attendance of the week so far).

Through three days it's Tony Ames [Minnetonka] and George Bleskachek [Eau Claire] who are atop the masterpoint winners with 41.32 gold points; 234 players in all have earned some gold so far, and there's another three days to go.

There was an online event this week for the Gold Rush and Open players, and the Gold Rush was won by Sarah and Jackson Wahl [Minneapolis] - with Karen Lee Barrett [Elk Point SD] and Anne Beaurivage [Lincoln NE] coming in tops among the field.  Congratulations to all those who played online and got some gold points!

AT THE MED CITY REGIONAL - DAY 2
Day 2 in Rochester at the Med City Regional saw another 68 tables in play, with our first Soloway-style KO winners!  The team of Carole Miner [Rochester], Cindy Balderson [Eden Prairie], Bob Balderson [Eden Prairie], and Kurt Schaeffer [Lakeville] took top honors in the first KO to earn 20.31 masterpoints.

Another mini-Soloway KO team event gets going tomorrow.  Today's Open Pairs winners were Tony Ames [Minnetonka] and George Bleskichek [Eau Claire], and the Gold Rush pair that came in 1st overall today was Linus Bendel-Stenzel [Edina] and partner Jackson Wahl [Minneapolis].

And today's Bracketed Swiss Teams champs were Jerry Rosenblad [Stewartville], Al Larson [Rochester], Ed Prosser [Rochester], and Rod Morlock [Stewartville] - well done, all!

Five years ago, there had been 202.5 tables in play through two days, so we're at 55.3% of 2019's tables to date.  (Historically, first time post-COVID-held tournaments have had 56% to 57% of their pre-COVID tables, so we are right in line with expectations.)

There is an online option for gold points with this tournament, that's open to everyone in D14.  These online evening games started tonight and continue tomorrow night - and have 5 tables in the Open crowd with 11 Gold Rush tables in play.  (These online tables are not included in the overall table counts here, as there was no online option in 2019.)

Full results from the tournament can be found by clicking here; and the online bulletin for today can be found by clicking here.  Masterpoint winners for the tournament can be found by clicking here.

OPENING DAY AT THE MED CITY REGIONAL

It's underway.  The Med City Regional in Rochester got going last night.

Winners on Tuesday included Greg Caucutt [Rochester] and Carole Mataya [Rochester], coming in 1st place overall in the Open Pairs.  In the Gold Rush pairs, Sydney Lund [Amery WI] and Colin Hall [Sioux Falls SD] came in 1st place overall - but there's more to the story.  These two have never played together - they got hooked up at the partnership desk - and still came in 1st place!  Congratulations to both these pairs (and everyone who had some fun on Tuesday).  Play resumes in the morning at 10am.

Full results can be found by clicking here; and it's not too late to join in on the fun!

A reminder that the online Open pairs and online Gold Rush get going tonight (Wednesday) at 7pm.  Just sign into BBO and look under the VACB games (just like you would for a regular club game) - you'll see the D14 Rochester Regional events listed.  Get a partner and play against other D14 pairs, to get some gold points without leaving your own living room!

September 3 2024
ONLINE REGIONAL GOLD POINTS TOMORROW NIGHT
The Med City Regional in Rochester this week features an online game for Open players - and an online game for Gold Rush players (under 750 masterpoints).  These games start tomorrow evening at 7pm, and continue Thursday evening at 7pm, and allow players from all over D14 to earn gold points just as if they were at the playing site in Rochester.  Get a partner for evening regional play this week and join the fun!
    - Sign on to BBO (Bridge Base Online)
    - Look under "Virtual Clubs"
    - Look under "North America"
    - Under the listing of available games, you'll see the Rochester
Med City Regional D14 games (both Open and Gold Rush)
    - Sign up for your game with your partner just like any club BBO game
This is a great way to earn regionally-rated gold points while never leaving your pajamas.  Plus, the winners of each event get the same winner's prize found at the Med City Regional and everyone who enters will receive the Med City Regional patch for their convention card at home.

September 2 2024
PREPARATIONS ARE COMPLETE - JUST ADD PLAYERS
Everything has been set up at the Empire Event Center in Rochester for the Med City Regional that starts tomorrow.  Now we're just waiting for the players to show up and the cards to be dealt!  If you are planning to head to the tournament this week, directions to the playing area can be found by clicking here.

And if you're not planning to head to Rochester, remember there's a convenient stay-at-home online option for this Regional, where you can get GOLD points by playing online.  It's just like any other VACB game on BBO, where you'll see the game listed for a 7:00pm start on Wednesday night.  Of course, there's nothing keeping you from attending this tournament in person - AND playing online!  But whether you'll be participating in person or online (or both!), it's all good to go for tomorrow's opening rounds at 1:30pm.

IT'S KIND OF OFFICIAL NOW
When the Minnesota Bridge Trailer shows up with the tables and bidding boxes, you know it's official.  The last piece(s) of the puzzle for a fun tournament would be the arrival of the tables for set-up. . .and that set-up will take place tomorrow evening thanks to some Rochester Bridge Club volunteers.

Everything is a "go" for this tournament starting Tuesday - and we hope to see you there.  (We will definitely save one of these tables for you.)

September is a busy, busy month for bridge players, and this is one of the major events - so plan on getting a partner and we'll see you on the 21st.

Donations from Unit 178's Aquatennial Sectional (and some individual donations to boot) totalled $1,580.00 for the Second Harvest Heartland organization.  On your left is the check presentation, with Dylan McNeill from Second Harvest on the left accepting the donation from Unit 178 President Sue Sanger [St Louis Park], Tournament Chair Marc Ashton [Excelsior], and Tournament Co-Chair Tom Botten [Prior Lake].  The generous donation from this tournament (and attending players!) is expected to provide 4,740 meals in our community - and if you would like to make a donation on your own to this very worthy cause, the Second Harvest website can be found by clicking here.

FINAL MN NAP CLUB QUALIFYING RESULTS
The first stage of the North American Pairs in Minnesota this year is over; the opportunity to qualify at your local bridge club has ended.  This year, there's been some emphasis on getting more players involved in the NAP, and that extra effort has produced a resounding success, with 822 tables of NAP players across Minnesota this summer.  Compared to just one year ago, that's a tables-in-play increase of +18.0%.

The number of Minnesota players who have qualified to go on in this competition is HUGE.  This year, 557 players have qualified in the NAP - that list of all those players can be accessed by clicking here.  The vast majority of these players (261) who have qualified are Flight "C" players, which is terrific.

Year-over-year table data is up compared to 2023 across the board.  Next up for the NAP is for these qualified players to play in the big NAP Unit Final.  That two-session event will be held on September 21st at the Bridge Center of St Paul, where lots of red and gold points await.  After that - it's the NAP D14 Finals, which will be held online the first weekend of October.  Congratulations to everyone who has qualified this year!

"IF MY FRIENDS COULD SEE ME NOW"
That's Jane Schmidt [St Paul] in the photo to your left.  Jane flew down to Dallas for the Labor Day Regional this week to play some cards with her sister. . .and sure enough, they're having fun.  Playing on a team with a pair from Layfayette, LA, they got their photo in the Daily Bulletin, winning their team bracket on Wednesday.  Well done, Jane!  (Now we are wondering if your sister will fly up here to play next week with you in Rochester?)

CALLING ALL TEAMS - GNT QUALIFYING GETTING UNDERWAY
Team play in duplicate bridge is picking up in popularity, and if you're into teams, the period from September 1st to March 28th is right up your alley.  The Grand National Teams qualifying period at the club level will run for the next six months.  Check your local club's calendar for GNT games and get a team together to play (and if you club isn't running enough of these GNT games for your taste, let your club manager know and they'll add a few).  It's a great way to earn some red/black points that are sectionally-rated - and enjoy that part of bridge that is all about international matchpoint (IMPs) scoring.

GOLD-POINT ONLINE GAMES NEXT WEEK
Here is a friendly reminder that even if you are not planning to travel to Rochester to play in the Med City Regional next week - you can still earn some gold points playing in the comfort of your own living room.

There will be an online option for both Gold Rush (under 750 masterpoints) and Open players on BBO starting next Wednesday evening at 7pm.  Just sign in to BBO and look under "virtual clubs" like any other online club game.  You'll see the regional games listed there.

NOTE that ALL participants in the online game option for this regional will receive our Med City Regional patch for their convention card (to impress their opponents, natch) - along with the one-of-a-kind prize for those that come in 1st place in their event.

NEXT MONTH IS ALL BRIDGE ALL OF THE TIME
Here's a friendly reminder that next month will be loaded with masterpoints for the earning, and with pretty much every possible color combination available to players.  Some of what you can expect:This could be the biggest month for masterpoints in some time!  So many opportunities for extra masterpoints during the next 30 days that someone should earn the title of "Minnesota Player Of The Month".  And regardless of how serious you are about getting the most masterpoints during the upcoming 30 days, the opportunities are there for everyone to get some scratch - a little or a lot.

SOMETIMES, YOU NEED A LITTLE LUCK
This week's Thursday lesson by John Koch [St Cloud] has to do with making a slam - by trying to figure out distributions - and maybe getting just a little bit of luck.  Click on the image to the right or click here to check out what John has to say about it.

ACBL's GNT STRAT CHANGES SETTLED
The ACBL's Region Directors have apparently come to an agreement on changing this season's GNT stratification, just in time for the GNT club-qualifying period to start on Sunday.  Last night a meeting was held to reconsider the original changes that had been approved; after some discussion there was a new motion presented (and approved, 10-3, with our R5 Director Dennis Carman voting to approve), which will create the following GNT strats:
     Open (unlimited masterpoints)
     0-6000 masterpoints (Flight "A")
     0-3000 masterpoints (Flight "B")
0-750 masterpoints, no Life Masters (Flight "C")
One of the sticking points was whether or not Life Masters could play in the new lowest flight (0-750).  At Regional tournaments, such as the one in Rochester starting Monday, LMs are allowed to play in the 0-750 Gold Rush.  But in the end, when it comes to the GNT Conditions of Contest, there will be non-Life Masters only in the Flight "C".  The new Conditions of Contest should be issued this weekend (and will be posted on this website).

GOPHER CARD TABLES GETTING A REFRESH
Last night Unit 103 President Sue Greenberg [Byron] held a zoom meeting online with the rest of the Unit Board in a regularly-scheduled get-together.  One of the discussion items that will impact many Minnesota players was the approval to purchase ten new card tables for the tournament trailer.  If you have played at the Gopher Regional, you know some of those tables are A) on their "last legs" - literally - and B) 30" tables rather than the standard 34".

With the trailer coming to Rochester for the regional there next week, this seemed like an ideal time to go through all of the tables and replace the worst of the worst.  A request has been made to Unit 178's Board to also purchase ten new tables (Gopher Chair Patti Stuhlman asked that the Units split the cost of this 50/50) - we'll see what they say.  In the meantime, look for newer, better tables at the Gopher next year for those finesses that still might not work.

ONE WEEK TO GO!
The countdown is approaching liftoff.  7 days from now, the Rochester Med City Regional gets underway at the Empire Event Center.  Directions to the Event Center can be found by clicking here.  It promises to be quite the week of bridge in Rochester, and don't forget there's an online option with this tournament on Wednesday and Thursday evenings next week.  Just sign on to BBO and click on the VACB games page (just like a virtual game for your local club) - you'll see the D14 Open and D14 Gold Rush tournaments listed.  (Of course, it won't quite be as exciting as being at the tournament itself, but surely it's the next best thing!)

BRIDGE - FOR YOUR HEALTH
Monday's heat indices across Minnesota range from the cool spot at the lake (Duluth, 89F) to everywhere else (above 105F today).  You know bridge is good for your mind, but today, for sure, being inside the air-conditioned bridge club playing cards will be much better for you than being outdoors.  Yardwork can wait; golf and tennis, maybe later in the week.  Get inside and play cards - for your health!

MINNESOTA NAP QUALIFIERS LIST

There are still a few scattered NAP games yet to go this week, but the list of Minnesota players who have qualified to go farther in the North American Pairs competition is already extensive; frankly, a much shorter list might be one of Minnesota players who have not qualified.  But that's great news - as Minnesota leads the way among District 14 states, with 557 players having qualified this summer.  (This includes 261 flight "C" players, which is off the chart.)  Click on the image to your left of the list to open it in a new window and scan for your name and eligibility.

Next step in the NAP is the Minnesota NAP Unit Final on Saturday, September 21st, which will be held in person at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Roseville location.  Then it is the online D14 NAP Finals October 5th and 6th (more on that by clicking here).

ACBL DOES AN ABOUT-FACE ON GNT STRATS - UPDATE
Here's another puzzler for you.  The Region Directors made a motion to change the GNT strats at the Toronto NABC effective September 1st of this year.  The motion to create a new strat (and change existing ones, more here) passed in Toronto 12-1.

But according to our Region 5 Director Dennis Carman [Chicago IL], there's a hitch involved.

The ACBL's Advisory Council has asked that the District Directors reconsider their motion - there is a meeting on this Tuesday night.  (We have made an effort to get some information from the Advisory Council, but have not yet heard anything.)  For now, it appears as though the GNT strats for the upcoming season (starting next Sunday) will remain as they have been.  (NOTE:  This reversal does not diminish any level of FUN with this year's GNT.)  Any updates we receive will be posted.  UPDATE:  Another motion made, and passed, will change the strats effective September 1st of this year.  The details can be found by clicking here.

KORY SOLARZ KNOCKDOWN TOURNAMENT
The St Cloud club's 2nd Annual Kory Solarz Knockdown Tournament was held this week (it had been postponed due to a COVID outbreak at the beginning of the month).  The travelling trophy for this event is named the "Boushek Board", in honor of David Boushek who makes the boards for every bridge session in St Cloud.  But the nickname for it might be the "Darlene Nastrom" Award, as she and three new teammates won the event - Darlene for the second time - (that's two out of two).

(Left to right, that's Mark Stiegel [St Cloud], Jane Curtis [Clear Lake], Greg Nastrom [St Cloud], and Darlene Nastrom [St Cloud].)  More details on the results of this fun night of bridge can be found by clicking here.

ACBL ISSUES NEW TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE POLICY
The ACBL has issued a new tournament schedule policy, which is for Regional and Sectional tournaments staffed by ACBL directors (it does not include Local Sectionals, or I/N Sectionals staffed by non-ACBL employees).  But if you're hiring an ACBL Director for your tournament, this policy will impact the scheduling of your event.

First, the ACBL's definition of a "session interval".  That's the time between the scheduled start time of two consecutive sessions.  A tournament with events at 10am and 2pm would be a four-hour session interval.  10am and 3pm would be a five-hour session interval.

In a nutshell:
Session intervals of less than four hours and thirty minutes (4:30) are not permitted except by special permission.  Permission must be requested by contacting tournaments@acbl.org.
4:30 or 4:45 session intervals are permitted for sessions of no more than 24 boards.
Session intervals of 5:00 or longer are permitted for pairs sessions up to 27 boards or team sessions up to 28 boards.
There's more.  Click here for all the details.  This policy is in effect as of September 1, 2024 for all new tournament schedule submissions.

ST PAUL's NLM SECTIONAL WRAP-UP
Three days of silver points wrapped up today at the Bridge Center of St Paul's NLM Tournament.  Another 17.5 tables today brought the tournament total to 60 tables, that's up 14 tables from last year (or +30.4%).

Today's big winners were Sarah Wahl [Minneapolis] and Linus Bendel-Stenzel [Edina], which, combined with their scores on day 1 of this tournament makes them the I/N Tournament Champions!  Congratulations to both of them - and to all the I/N players who scored some silver points at the tournament this week.

You can find all the results from this tournament by clicking here; now that these players got a chance to earn some silver points, next up it's gold points at the Rochester Med City Regional in a couple of weeks!  Congratulations to all the players this week in St Paul.  Below are your masterpoint leaders from the tournament.

TREND TOWARDS FACE-TO-FACE HOLDING STEADY
During the initial lockdowns during COVID, online play was a godsend for bridge players (and their clubs).  Since bridge is such a social game, once clubs started opening back up three years ago, the trend has been moving to back to in-person bridge. . .and that trend continues now.

Below is a chart of the combined Minnesota club face-to-face tables as a percentage of club in-person and online tables.  The trend, over time, has been to move back to in-person bridge - and over the past 52 weeks, face-to-face tables have consistently made up more than 90% of all Minnesota club tables.  Remember, just four years ago, there was some question if we would ever be back at the bridge table in person!  But for fans of F2F cards, it's all good news.

THE THROW-IN
This week's Thursday column is by Keith Connolly [St Paul], and it's about the "throw-in".  (And it's not throwing in the towel.)  This is a play to help you get one more trick at the table - and he says it's not as difficult as it may sound.  Click on the image to the right or click here to have a look at Keith's discussion.

HERE IS YOUR LATEST MINNESOTA LIFE MASTER
That's Faye Bowers [Marquette MI] and Thorwald Hansen [Edina] to your left, two of the players who traveled from out of town to play in the regional tournament over in Eau Claire WI this week.  They aren't partners, but they do share something in common, and that is that they both crossed the line to become Life Masters yesterday!  It's always great to make that achievement at a tournament, and for these two, it happened this week in Eau Claire.  Congratulations to each of them, and when you see Thorwald at the table here in Minnesota, be sure to congratulate him in person.

GOPHER PLAYERS BADGER THE LOCALS - UPDATE
This week there is a four-day regional over in Eau Claire WI.  It's close enough that some Minnesota players are making the (roughly) two-hour trip (for most) to play for some gold points there.  UPDATE:  Through two of the four days, more than one-third (36.5%) of the masterpoint winners are from Minnesota.  They are listed to your right.

WHEN SIZE MATTERS
Following up on yesterday's post regarding the increasing number of Minnesota tables in play (since the May Gopher tournament), it's not just that there are more overall tables in play.  The number of tables in play per game is also on the increase.  So if your local game seems to be getting just a little bit larger, you're right.

Check out the six-week rolling average of tables per Minnesota F2F club game below.  It lists every weekly six-week rolling average since the post-COVID reopening in 2021; and the 12-week post-Gopher Regional period for each year is highlighted in red.

What this chart shows is that two years ago, the average size of the typical Minnesota F2F club game was 6.30 tables.  One year later (in 2023), it went up +5.3% to 6.63 tables per game.  And this year, it has gone up another +5.1% to 6.97 tables per game.  There's always room for improvement - but this is a trend that is currently moving in the right direction.

F2F MINNESOTA TABLE COUNTS ON THE RISE

It's been 12 weeks since the Gopher Regional Tournament, and for the most part Minnesota's year-over-year face-to-face (F2F) bridge play continues to be on the increase.

Between club F2F play (up +8.1%) and the three tournaments since the Gopher (+22.2%), overall tables in play across the state are up +9.7% over the same 12 post-Gopher weeks as in 2023.  With the Edina Senior Center closed for a short period this summer, Unit 178's club tables took a small hit - but the Twin Cities Metro area still saw growth of +10.9% over last year.  Here are those table counts for the period of May 27 to August 17:

If you're curious as to how much the Bridge Center of St Paul is driving table counts in the Metro Area right now, the lower of the two charts above to your left is the same data over the last 12 weeks but excludes all BCSP tables from 2023 and 2024.  It's what is happening with the state's bridge tables everywhere else.

The result: Without the growth happening at the Bridge Center of St Paul, Minnesota's overall F2F club tables have still risen +2.8% over last year; Metro Area tables showing very modest growth (+0.8%, thanks to the Woodbury Club); and the rest of Unit 103 clubs over the period saw an increase of +7.5%.

"SILVER SENIORS" ACBL-WIDE GAME OCTOBER 10
For those bridge players over the age of 60, there is an ACBL-wide "Silver Seniors" game on Thursday afternoon, October 10th.  Because it's an ACBL-wide game, there will be plenty of extra masterpoints available, and those seniors that finish with an overall score will get 10% silver points.

Clubs, including here in Minnesota, do not have to have a Thursday afternoon sanction to participate, but their club must register by clicking here.  Any club can participate, so if you'd like your local bridge club to be part of the party, be sure to ask your club manager about getting involved.

SEPTEMBER IS COMING, AND IT IS A DOOZY
You'd be hard-pressed to come up with a bigger month for bridge in the state of Minnesota than the month of September this year.  There's all KINDS of special events going on, and if you are a bridge lover (which you are), you've got lots to choose from.  Chances are pretty good that you could earn more masterpoints in September than in any other month this year.  (And maybe than in any month for many years?)

First up is Minnesota's second big regional of the year, the Med City Regional in Rochester.  September 3rd through the 8th, it features pairs and team games every day (including Sunday).  There is also an online game attached to this tournament, where you can earn gold points from your basement (the online games are restricted to D14 players only, and all Minnesota players belong to D14, so you're good to go).

Less than two weeks later is the Minnesota NAP Unit Final.  This two-session red and gold point extravaganza will be held at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Roseville location.  You must have qualified at the club level to play in this game (see the list of NAP qualifiers by clicking here).  This Unit NAP Final will be a party, and in addition to all of the sectionally-rated pigmented masterpoints going out the door, it should be a great deal of fun.  As with the NAP qualifying, all the "C" players play together - separate from the "B"s and the "A"s.

The very next week is Mankato's Rambling River Sectional!  This is the first big sectional for Mankato in many years, and they are planning to put on quite the presentation.  Lots of silver points will be available to players who stop by Mankato on September 28th and 29th.  This will be a terrific way to finish the month of September bridge tournament play.  (The flyer for the Mankato Sectional is to your right, or you can click here.).

On top of all of the tournament action next month, September is International Fund Game month - so your local bridge club will be holding some International Fund games for extra black masterpoints.  And Wednesday, September 11th is an ACBL-wide International Fund Game, where (once again) lots and lots of extra masterpoints are available.  And did we mention that the Grand National Teams qualifying period begins on September 1st?  September will be "lit" - bring it on!

October 7 through November 11 (six sessions)

UNIT 103 NAP "C" PLAYERS PROGRAM PAYING OFF
This NAP season, Unit 103 offered to reimburse table fees for Minnesota clubs holding separate NAP Flight "C" games - to encourage participation.  There are still a couple of weeks to go in the club-qualifying NAP season, but already, NAP tables from stand-alone Flight "C" games are up +91.7% over last year.  So far, Minnesota has seen 46 Flight "C" tables in separate Unit 103 Flight "C" games, compared to just 24 tables in 2023, which is terrific for the program (and more importantly, the players).  Next up will be the Unit NAP Final September 21st!

LONG TRUMPS AND DISTRIBUTION = GOOD GAMES
Something along the "points schmoints" argument, this week's John Koch [St Cloud] column shows how you should be bidding more when you have long trumps and good distribution.  It includes some terrific hands, and against some famous opponents (or is that "infamous?").  Click on the image to the right or click here to check out what John has to say about it.

SUNDAYS ARE ABOUT TO GET A LOT MORE FUN
Beginning on Sunday, September 8th, the Bridge Center of St Paul will host an open pairs game at 6:30pm.  Prior to the game each week, starting on the 15th, there will be an intermediate lesson taught by Keith Connolly [St Paul], which starts at 6:00pm.

Keith's lesson on the 15th will be about counting winners and losers on your initial hand, and how to plan for an end play.  Advance sign-up isn't required, just bring a partner and the expectation of a good time.

MINNESOTA NAP QUALIFIERS APPROACH 550
North American Pairs games this week popped Minnesota player qualification up to 546 players - that is awesome.  The full list of players is available by clicking on the image to your left; there are 334 Unit 103 players that have qualified at the club level, with 212 Unit 178 players qualifying.  And there are several NAP qualification games yet to come before club qualification closes shop at the end of the month, so look for this number of Minnesota players to top 550 before it's all over.  All of these players are eligible to play in the Minnesota Unit NAP Final on Saturday, September 21 at the Bridge Center of St Paul (flyer for that event is here), where wheelbarrows will be on hand to help with the massive red (and gold) points going out the door.

August 14 2024
UNIT 103 GNT CLUB REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM
Just as with this year's North American Pairs, Unit 103 clubs that run Flight "C" games for the upcoming Grand National Teams competition will be reimbursed for their table fees by the Unit.  Any Unit 103 club can run a GNT Flight "C" game between September 1st and March 28th at no cost to run the game (up to 30 aggregate Flight "C" tables per club).  It's part of a larger effort to increase Flight "C" player participation in the NAP and GNT programs (which worked wonderfully with the NAP this year).  ACBL table fees for GNT club-level games are $7.15/table, some of the most expensive club games to run. . .but this year they don't have to be.  Your club can run them for free - so be sure to ask your club manager to schedule a few!

GOPHER REGIONAL WRAP-UP HELD ONLINE
While all tournament eyes are on the Rochester Med City Regional in a few weeks, Patti Stuhlmann [Minneapolis] held an online get-together with the Gopher Regional Planning Committee to wrap up this year's May tournament and look ahead to the Gopher in May 2025.  Patti provided details of this year's Gopher attendance and finances, soliciting feedback from the team and previewing the 2025 tournament.  In on the zoom meeting was Gopher Co-Chair Warren Nelson [Cloquet], along with Bev Meyer [Minneapolis], Annie Schaeffer [Lakeville], Steve Gaynor [Inver Grove Heights], Jean Boettcher [Inver Grove Heights], Sue Greenberg [Byron], Matt Belau [Rochester], Matt Koltnow (DIC) [Seattle WA], Mike Cassel [Roseville], Jane Schmidt [St Paul] and Sue Sanger [St Louis Park].

Patti reported attendance at this year's Gopher (751.5 tables) was up +9.4% compared to 2023.  There was also a profit of $6,316.36 from this year's event, split between the two Minnesota Units.  For the 2025 Gopher, a couple of new ideas are on tap.  One, the two-day four-session team events limited participation; so there was discussion to move to Bracketed Teams each day of the tournament.  Two, should an evening session be added to the tournament?  Committee members want to have an opporunity for those who work a chance to play during the evening, even if that is online.  The schedule for the 2025 Gopher is expected to be set in September.

Connie Nelson [Avon], the Gopher Publicity Chair, Warren Nelson [Cloquet], the Gopher Co-Chair with Patti, and Brian Crossley [Burnsville], Information Desk Chair, are all retiring from their positions going forward.  They have done a terrific job over the years, and everyone thanks them (especially Patti!) for their support.  Betty Trillegi (Richfield) is taking over the Information Desk, and Bev Meyer [Minneapolis] and Annie Schaeffer [Lakeville] will work together on the 2025 Partnership Desk.  If you or someone you know might be interested in helping out with next year's Gopher, Patti would love to hear from you.  It's never too early to start working on next year's tournament.

Notes from the meeting are to your left (click to open in a new window).

NAME THIS MINNESOTA BRIDGE PLAYER
This Minnesota bridge player is getting ready to cross the 10,000 masterpoint mark within the next month (chances are very good it will happen just at or before the Rochester Med City Regional).  Some really terrific finishes during the course of this bridge player's career, with a 3rd place overall at the 2016 Spring NABC in the Rockwell Mixed Pairs. . .and a 2nd place overall at the 2016 Summer NABC in the 0-10K Mixed Swiss teams!

Just who is this Minnesota bridge player?  You may already know who it is. . .but if not, we'll have an update when they cross that 10,000 masterpoint finish line.  And if it happens in Rochester, there will definitely be a party that you do not want to miss.

NEXT WEEK'S NON-LIFE MASTER TOURNAMENT
If you have not already scheduled your partnerships for the Bridge Center of St Paul's NLM tournament next week, there's still time.  One week from Wednesday, NLMs get their own silver point sectional games at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Roseville location.  (The flyer is to your right - click on it to check it out.)

This event is being held Wednesday August 21st to Friday August 23rd, with NLM pairs games at 10am and 2pm.  Non-Life Masters with up to 749 masterpoints are invited, however because it's stratified, 99ers get compared to players with their own experience level.  If you're looking to play and need a partner, Kim Hayward [Bayport] will set you up - call her at 651-271-3500.

GOPHER #1 IN YEAR-OVER-YEAR REGIONAL TABLES
This past week's regional in Omaha NE had a total of 810 tables; that's off by -15.2% and just 57 more tables than those hosted at the Gopher this year.  So far in 2024, there have been five open regionals held in the Upper Midwest. . .and of these five, the Gopher Regional in May has seen the greatest improvement in table counts (year-over-year) with a +9.5% increase leading the pack.  (Here is hoping that this is a trend that will continue!)

MINNESOTANS SCORING IN OMAHA THIS WEEK
There were more than a dozen Minnesota bridge players that made the trip to the Omaha Regional this week.  It's a great tournament, and despite total tables being off by roughly -16.4% this year, this tournament is still a bit larger than the Gopher.

Our Minnesota players did well in Omaha this week, with 12 of them earning some masterpoints at the tournament.  You can see a list of the Minnesota players and their Omaha Regional winnings to your left (click on the chart to open it in a new window).

Of note: of these Minnesota players, Amy Dutton [Mendota Heights] and her partner Bill Bonneau [Omaha NE] came in 1st place overall in the Wednesday Gold Rush - well done, Amy!

SOMEBODY JUST WON THE "BAD BEAT JACKPOT"
We'd say "don't you just hate it when this happens", but for most of us, this is probably never going to happen.  That's because you have to start out by having a 70.00% game, which is extremely difficult to do.  But this week Dennis Hoffelt [Detroit Lakes] and partner Barbara Lanier [El Cerrito CA] had a good game going up in Detroit Lakes on Thursday.  What felt like a good game turned into a GREAT game, as they finished with a 71.30% score.  Quite the good result and cause for celebration!

So imagine their - disappointment - when they found out that their spectacular result was only good enough for 2nd place overall in the game?  Jim Brothers [Mesa AZ] and Jon Martin [Fargo] earned enough matchpoints to come in 1st overall with a 73.96% game.  Even better!  These 70.00%+ scores are rare enough, but to have two in the same game is quite unusual.

If you're familiar with poker rooms, most have what's known as a "bad beat jackpot".  A small portion of the table stakes go to this fund which gets paid out when (as an example) someone has at least an aces-full house or better - and loses to a better hand.  Perhaps your local club needs to start such a thing!  (They sure could have used one in Detroit Lakes this week.)

A QUICK NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS UPDATE
You have a few weeks left to qualify for the North American Pairs at your local club; there are lots of NAP games still scheduled for this month (check your local club's calendar by clicking here).  A quick update on Minnesota players shows player participation and player qualification is getting more impressive every week.

Through August 9th, there have been 533 Minnesota bridge players who have qualified to go farther in the NAP program this year; that's incredible.  Almost half of those players, 251 of them, are in the Flight "C" category.  Also - incredible.

A reminder of the big Unit NAP Final coming up in about six weeks at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Roseville location - Flight "A", Flight "B" and Flight "C" players all have their own separate flight to play in, so you're playing against players of the same experience level for those red points (and gold dust!).

KORY SOLARZ KNOCKDOWN TOURNEY RESCHEDULED
In addition to the St Cloud bridge club cancelling their games this week, COVID cases within the club have also prompted a rescheduling of the 2nd Annual Kory Solarz Knockdown Tourney.  Originally to be played on Thursday night this week, the event will take place three weeks later, on Thursday evening August 29th.  The craziness and all-around good time of this bridge get-together should be well worth the extra wait!  (As will be the photos that are taken that night.)

"CALM BLUE OCEAN CALM BLUE OCEAN CALM BLUE OCEAN"
Waters can get a little choppy at the bridge table sometimes, and we've all had a chance to close our eyes and repeat to ourselves "calm blue ocean" in the hopes that it really will help calm things down.  But here's a chance to actually be on that calm blue ocean while at the bridge table, and with a few other bridge friends.

Lou Tesler [Eden Prairie] is organizing a bridge cruise April 12-19 2025.  It's aboard the Celebrity Equinox, which starts/ends at Port Canveral, FL, and stops in the Bahamas, Belize, and Cozumel, Mexico.   Lou is planning daily ACBL-sanctioned bridge games (masterpoints while cruising!), and says deep discounts are available for those who act quickly.  (There is an additional charge up to $200 per person to cover the cost of the sanction, ACBL director, equipment and enhanced internet.)  The flyer is to your left - click on it to view it in a new window, and if you'd like more information contact Lou at loutesler@me.com or 612-859-1835.

[ED: The Bridge Blog receives no commission or compensation regarding this cruise, we just know cruising and bridge go so well together and thus are just passing this along for those who might be interested.]

COVID CLOSES ST CLOUD BRIDGE GAMES THIS WEEK
Due to the high number of COVID cases within the St Cloud bridge playing group, all St Cloud games this week have been cancelled.  Games are expected to resume on Monday, August 12th.  Remember - if you have symptoms (COVID, cold, allergy, or otherwise), STAY HOME - your bridge playing friends will be happy to try and set you when you are feeling better.

HARDEST WORKING BRIDGE GUY IN RICE COUNTY
Or many more counties, for that matter.  It's Nate Pike [Northfield], who took over the Northfield Bridge Club responsibilities when long time founder Evie Estenson passed away a couple of years ago.  Every Thursday, duplicate bridge is held at the Community Center in Northfield, alternating between teams play one week and pairs the next.  It's not expensive; the card fees are $1 per session.  But Nate puts on a spread as if you're at a major tournament!

They only average four tables a week, but there are no sit-outs.  Donated computers allow Nate to set up BBO fill-ins should there be a half-table. . .and he sets those up in advance of the game every week.  His results page is tied to a flat-screen monitor, so you're always aware of how the game is going; and while there is no dealing machine, all players chip in and separate cards into suits once you're done with the table action.  There are plenty of bridge clubs with more tables each game that don't have a club manager willing to go through all this each week.  And it would sure be easy to not put out as much effort (or just do what's needed or required). . .but Northfield is lucky to have Nate Pike in charge, and if you visit their club on a Thursday you'll see what we mean.

GEARING UP FOR GRAND NATIONAL TEAMS

While the North American Pairs club qualifying ends this month, the Grand National Teams play at your local club fires up starting September 1st.  And while it is true that less experienced players tend to shy away from teams play (usually due to unfamiliarity more than anything else), teams at tournaments and team online play is up quite a bit of late.  (The top chart on your left is the teams tables at the Minnesota Gopher over the years as a percentage of all tables at the tournament.)

Even at the Gopher Regional now, teams tables account for almost half of all the tables at the tournament (41.1%)!  In additional to the Grand National Teams starting up next month, there is the Rochester Regional (with teams play every day of the tournament); there's also teams play as part of the Mankato Sectional at the end of the month.  So plenty of opportunities for getting a foursome together and having some fun getting into trouble as a team are coming up.

When it comes to the GNT, historically Minnesota has most of its tables in play during the month of September (last year's Minnesota GNT tables are listed on the lower chart to your left, by month of the competition) - so watch for those GNT games on your local club schedule.

ACTIVE DEFENSE OR PASSIVE?  SOME TIPS
"More tricks are given away with the wrong defense than all the signals in the world."  So says John Koch [St Cloud], and we're not one to argue.  This week John provides 22 different hands, providing tips on when to be active on defense - and when to be passive.  Click on the image to the right or click here to check out what John has to say about it.

MINNESOTA IS CRUSHING THE D14 NAP SO FAR
Minnesota bridge clubs (and their players) are crushing the North American Pairs through two months.  D14 includes Nebraska, Iowa, the Dakotas, and Minnesota, but when it comes to the NAP this year, it's all Minnesota so far.  The top 5 D14 clubs for NAP tables this summer are all in our state.

The Omaha NE metro area, home to Omaha Bridge Studio (the largest bridge club in all of D14) has had 1,008 total bridge tables during June and July.  But 0 (that's zero) of those tables were NAP tables.  Not one single game in Omaha this summer has been an NAP game.  The Twin Cities metro area has had 1,167 total bridge tables the past two months, with 263 of those tables (or 22.5%) as NAP tables.  (Even the Des Moines IA metro area, with their 397 tables in June and July, had 35 tables of NAP players.)  This is one big reason why Minnesotans dominate the D14 NAP and GNT program.  Minnesota clubs participate - and encourage their bridge players to get involved.  Even with the largest club in D14 in Omaha, it's impossible for players to participate when you don't hold any NAP games.

So why don't other bridge clubs within D14 do more to provide these games for their players?  That is a question that will likely come up in D14 meetings down the road.  With still one month to go in the NAP, all indications at the moment are that Minnesota will be leading the way once again in the North American Pairs competition this year.

NEW STUDY: IT REALLY HURTS TO THINK
If you've ever found yourself with a headache after a three-session day of tournament bridge, or feeling exhausted at the end of a week-long regional having played every day without a day off, a new study shows it's not just you.  New research published by the American Psychological Association shows that mental exertion leads to irritation or frustration in many situations - supporting the concept that it hurts to think.

The study, conducted by Radboud University in the Netherlands, appeared Monday in the association's monthly journal, Psychological Bulletin.  The senior author of the study, Erik Bijleveld, is a psychologist and associate professor at Radboud University.  His team compiled studies involving a variety of participants -- for instance, healthcare workers, military employees, amateur athletes and college students -- from 29 countries.  The research team collected data from 358 different cognitive tasks -- learning a new technology, finding one's way around an unfamiliar environment, practicing golf swings and playing a virtual reality game, to name a few (with no mention of duplicate bridge, interestingly enough).  In all studies that researchers analyzed, participants reported the level of effort they exerted and the extent to which they had unpleasant feelings, such as frustration, irritation, stress or annoyance.

Across all populations and tasks, the more significant the mental effort, the higher the unpleasantness that participants experienced.  So what does this say about bridge players?

Well, for one thing, you're tougher than the rest of the population.  If it really does hurt to think (and you can read the details of the study here), you're willing to put up with it to play cards.  The benefits of duplicate bridge are well documented, and bridge is still wildly fun.  Second, if you do find a bit of mental exhaustion after a tough day at the bridge table, then this study doesn't really provide anything new - rather it confirms what you already know.  Bridge is great exercise for your brain, and exercise (of every sort) can be tiring.  Third, even if you don't make every right decision during a bridge game, the decision to play in the first place is the best possible decision you can make.  The social aspect of duplicate bridge, helping to stave off cognitive decline down the road, and the thrill of competition at the table easily overwhelm any potential frustration or stress from playing.  Now we just need a study like this based on or including the bridge playing public!

THE LATEST ON EDGAR
Progress on EDGAR, the ACBL's computer program to determine cheating players, was provided during the Summer NABC in Toronto.  At the current rate of the program, the ACBL expects that all roughly 83,000 online players will have been screened in about 18 months (somewhere between October 2025 and March 2026).  The ACBL claims players who have been determined to be cheating are currently between 1.3% and 2.0% of all players (there's some redundancy in statistics, so there's no exact count of cheaters).  More data will provide more accurate results of course, but as of now 11 cases are before the Institute for Bridge Arbitration, and so far 242 players have been tagged as "red", or cheating, according to the computer program.

Here are the statistics as of July 10th:

CELEBRATING IN ST CLOUD
As players continue to grow in their game, and milestones are achieved, it's great to celebrate new rank achievements as they happen.  And up in St Cloud, they celebrate those milestones in style!

To your right would be Nancy Balfanz [St Cloud] and Sue Knauss [Rockville], who recently made Life Master and Bronze Life Master (respectively).  Everyone else at the club in St Cloud was celebrating with them last week - along with a piece of celebratory cake.  Well done, you two!  (It makes one consider making every rank achievement milestone up in St Cloud!?)

UPCOMING REGIONAL SPORTING AN ONLINE OPTION
Even if you are not currently planning to travel to Rochester's upcoming Med City Regional, you'll still have the opportunity to earn some regionally-rated gold points during tournament week next month.  Wednesday, September 4th, and Thursday, September 5th will have special online BBO games available that are tied to the tournament.

There will be an Open two-session game and a Gold Rush two-session game for players limited to District 14 players (all players in Minnesota are in D14).  More details will come as we get closer to the tournament, but the good news is that you can still get some gold points even if you can't make it to Rochester.  And if you can make it to Rochester, these games will be a 3rd session during the week for those bridge players who just cannot get enough bridge.  (You. . .you know who you are.)

MINNESOTA TABLE TRENDS
Much like the rest of the country, Minnesota's face-to-face (F2F) tables are predominantly held during the week on Mondays.  Over the past 52 weeks ending July 22nd of this year, the state has averaged 246.5 club F2F tables per week.  (That's not counting tournaments.)  72 tables a week are held on Monday, which is followed by Thursday and then Tuesday, with no regular in-person games held on Sundays.

Presently, of the 37 regularly scheduled Minnesota club games each week, 11 of them are limited masterpoint games.  The chart to your left shows the average tables per game over the past 52 weeks for the regularly scheduled bridge games across the state; while the chart below shows the average tables per weekday.  Trends continue to be on the upswing, which is great!

TFW YOU MEET YOUR 5th GRADE TEACHER AT THE TABLE
Muggs Ernste [Northfield] is a regular in the Northfield Thursday game; and this week Matt Belau [Rochester] made an appearance at the Northfield game with a few friends on a team to play in the Northfield team game.  So naturally they ran into each other at the table, and as it turns out, Muggs taught Matt when he was a 5th grade student at Edison Elementary in Rochester some 54 years ago.  For the record, he did apologize to her for being such a problem student so many years ago - and he says "54 years later, and she's still teaching me a few things!"  (You just never know who you will meet at a bridge game.)

HELPING TO MAKE A DOUBLE-SQUEEZE A SURE THING
This week's John Koch [St Cloud] column instructs on how to help make a double-squeeze a sure thing.  And if you're not ready to try a double-squeeze, his write-up helps to find a missing honor. . .one that you might want to know about to make your contract!  (HINT - if you try the 60% finesse, you're down two.)  Click on the image to the right or click here to check out what John has to say about it.

END-OF-JULY NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS UPDATE
There's two months down and one month to go in the club-qualifying stage of the North American Pairs.  This past month saw a drop overall in Minnesota NAP tables, which isn't surprising - these games are a little pricey for your local club to run, and once everyone is qualified, there's not much incentive to keep running them (as players only need to qualify once).

Overall, Minnesota's NAP tables this month came in at 276.5 tables, which is a bit off June's 282 tables (or -2.0%). . .but these first two months of qualification have still had more tables (559) than last year's June and July combined Minnesota NAP tables (413 through two months).

The number of Minnesota players who have qualified to go on in this competition is HUGE.  Currently, 493 players have qualified in the NAP - that list of all those players can be accessed by clicking here.  This includes a whopping 227 Flight "C" players!  And don't forget the big NAP Unit Final will be held on September 21st at the Bridge Center of St Paul, where lots of red and gold points await pre-qualified players.  If you still haven't yet qualified, there is one more month to go!  (See the list of August club calendars by clicking here.)

COVID: WE'RE NOT DONE YET
Not everything on this blog is "happy news", although that would be okay; occasionally, a not-so-happy topic comes up that's best addressed.  The explosion of COVID cases at the recent Toronto NABC wasn't completely unexpected, as any time you get 1,400 people in the same giant room at bridge tables, you're bound to have a case or two from the start.

But Minnesota's COVID levels have also been rising this summer to near-wintertime levels (as have levels across the US).  Here's a friendly reminder that we are not done with COVID yet; and although the ACBL eliminated all COVID protocols in May, you may still want to take some precautions.  You also may notice a few more local players staying home because they're not feeling well, or you may see a few extra masks at the bridge club this month.  The CDC does not track cases like they used to - but there are still COVID viral indicators available.  Here is a look at wastewater viral activity in our state over the past twelve months - indicating six times as much COVID activity as last summer:

PLAYER CONTRIBUTIONS MATTER SO MUCH
Whether you're mentoring a bridge player who is far less experienced, or opting to help take down tables at a bridge tournament, player contributions matter.  Writing a check also falls into this category, naturally.

The St Cloud club's dealing machine went kaput this month.  Technology is terrific - as long as it works - and when a bridge club's dealing machine goes down, it's up to the club manager or player volunteers to make the boards. . .by hand.  Now, Dave Boushek [Waite Park] and Scott Krupke [Little Falls] and their fingerpads are getting a reprieve as the St Cloud Bridge Club is getting a new dealing machine.  Thanks to equal contributions from club member and all-around good guy Roger Melaas [St Cloud], along with their home unit, Unit 103, the dealing machine will cost the St Cloud Bridge Club absolutely nothing.

Players might not notice the difference - and thanks to the generous contributions involved, there won't be any difference in their club's funds.  It will, however, make things much, much easier for Dave, Scott, and everyone else who helped to put made boards together.  A special thanks goes out to Roger Melaas, for making such a selfless contribution to bridge in central Minnesota!

(That's Scott and Roger in the photo to your right.)

MINNESOTA NAP TABLES UP 31% FROM LAST YEAR
We're two-thirds of the way through the club-qualifying phase of the North American Pairs now.  A concerted effort has been made to drum up some excitement for this contest this year, and that effort appears to be paying off.  Overall, statewide NAP tables at local bridge clubs through these two months have totalled 539 (vs 413 through this period last year).  And by every metric, participation is up (statewide NAP tables are up 30.5% over last year at this time).  To your right is a chart of NAP tables in Minnesota, and whether you are breaking it down by Unit or geographic district, everything is pointing towards better participation than 12 months ago.  One more month to go, and then all qualified players (493 of them, to date) are eligible to play in the big NAP Unit Finals party at the Bridge Center of St Paul in September.

NABC UPDATE ON THE REMAINING MINNESOTANS
Long time partners Lynne Castoldi [Minnetonka] and Aly El-Selehdar [Minnetonka] are playing in the 0-10K Mixed Swiss event (along with teammates Patty and Gonzalez Herrera from Mexico).  They had a nice qualifying session yesterday, with their team placing in 4th out of 34 teams.  Here's how it is going in today's matches:

NABC MIXED 0-10K SWISS TEAMS - Sunday play, 18 teams remaining
Match 1 Match 2 Match 3 Match 4 Match 5 Match 6 Match 7 Match 8
vs #3 team vs #1 team vs #4 team vs #3 team vs #6 team vs #4 team vs #4 team vs #5 team

Just missing out on 1st place is tough, but what a fun dinner tonight and plane ride home for them both.  (And just for the record, the Castoldi/El-Selehdar team beat the eventual 1st place team by 35 IMPs in a match today, FWIW).  Those 45 points they earned (40.50 gold/4.50 platinum) helped them top all Minnesota players for masterpoints won at this year's summer NABC.  Congratulations!

Keith Connolly [St Paul] and Vern Swing [Minneapolis] competed in the four-session NABC Fast Pairs this weekend.  All four of their games in this contest were better than average - with game percentages of 52.43%, 53.22%, 51.62%, and 52.86%.  The result was 28th place out of 38 pairs left today, for 12.12 platinum points!  Well done!

And finally, Aydn Math [Northfield] is one of Minnesota's youngest bridge players at the age of 22.  He played in a lot of the Collegiate events this week at the NABC, and today was on a foursome that won their bracket in the round robin teams event.  He finished with 11.11 masterpoints for the tournament.

NEW NAP AND GNT FLIGHTS GET THE ACBL's GREEN LIGHTS
At the Toronto NABC last month, the ACBL's Board of Directors got together and voted to alter both the North American Pairs flights (12-1, approving) and the Grand National Teams flights (12-1, approving).  The idea was to increase participation for lower- and mid-masterpoint players that stopped competing as they were forced into higher strats.  Click on the image to the right to have a look at the new details and vote results.  NOTE that the GNT changes take place this November, but the NAP flights won't change until 2025.

AND THEN THERE WAS ONE
Just one day remains at the Toronto ON NABC, but Minnesota players are not yet finished with this tournament.  Lynne Castoldi [Minnetonka] and Aly El-Selehdar [Minnetonka] entered the 0-10K Mixed Swiss event, and their team is in 4th place out of 34 teams today.  That will propel them into the final sessions tomorrow, and ensure that Minnesota players will still be getting masterpoints on the last day of the NABC!

This is the tournament that will make its appearance in Minneapolis in July of 2026.  As it turns out, the NABC this summer has been quite successful in terms of table counts; with one day to go, there have been 8,988 tables in play.  That's up +12.5% compared to the same tourament in Chicago last summer.  It remains to be seen how Minnesota's NABC will do, but Minnesota players have done quite well in this tournament over the past 11 days.

That's Unit 103 President Sue Greenberg [Byron] taking a break from the big tournament to enjoy some of the host city!

NEW MEMBER CONTACT PERSON NEEDED
Judy Hansen [Eagan] has been putting together a "new member" packet for all new Minnesota bridge players for as long as we can remember.  Each new Minnesota player gets a welcome letter in the mail which includes details about upcoming tournaments, where to play and when, website information, and more.  It has been a terrific way to contact new members with important information, especially who can answer questions for them (at all levels of bridge contact).

It'll be tough to follow in Judy's footsteps here, but she's earned a well-deserved break from this (she actually started this program from scratch - and on her own - many, MANY years ago).  Now, Sue (Unit 178 President) and Sue (Unit 103 President) are looking for a volunteer to take over sending out these letters to newer players.  If you're interested (or know someone who would be) please give your Unit President a shout.  (And next time you see Judy, give her a shout-out for her great work.)

MINNESOTA'S NEWEST EMERALD LIFE MASTER
It's Lance Chamberlain [Rochester].  Although Lance is playing in the NABC in Toronto, ON this week, he crossed the 7,500 masterpoint line sometime this last month playing right here in Minnesota.  There are rumours of a party down the road for Lance (if you know Lance, you know he is the "hard partying type") and when that get-together takes place we will make sure to post some photos here.

A hearty shout-out to Lance, Minnesota's newest Emerald Life Master!

TWO DAYS TO GO IN TORONTO

Just a couple of days left at the Toronto NABC, but Minnesota players are still making their mark.  Randy Okubo [St Paul] and his partner from Somerville MA came in 9th of 44 pairs in today's Fast Pairs morning session.  Lynne Castoldi [Minnetonka] and Aly El-Selehdar [Minnetonka] had a nice carryover score from their 4th place qualifying position yesterday in the NABC 0-10K Pairs - then had a 58.52% game this morning and finished today's sessions with a 4th place overall finish - good for 17.92 gold points 1.99 platinum points!

METRO BRIDGE CLUB HANDICAPS - UPDATE
The Wednesday morning Metro Bridge Club game in Edina is the biggest game in the state of Minnesota (averaging 15.08 tables per game each week over the past 18 months).  So far this year, there have been 30 Wednesday morning games held - and 181 different bridge players have earned some masterpoints there in 2024.  To your left is an update on the handicaps for these players, with Joe Koester [Brooklyn Park] and John Schlundt [Eden Prairie] still holding on to a very tight race for "player of the year".  (A reminder that there's a minimum number of games one must play in to be considered eligible for a handicap.  There are a couple of Wednesday morning players who do have higher average scores than these two, but haven't played in enough games yet to be added to the list. . .so things could certainly change.)

KATHY STADTHER MAKES THE NABC BULLETIN
Congratulations to Kathy Stadther [St Cloud] who became a new Life Master yesterday!  Kathy (along with partner Jan Gembol [Clear Lake]) won the Gold Rush Pairs on Thursday, racking up 12.34 gold points, far more than the 5.11 gold needed for her Life Master achievement.  Kathy had her photo taken and put in the Toronto NABC Bulletin today (see left) - and there may be a photo of her with Bronia Jenkins, the head of the ACBL (we're still looking for that one).

It's always exciting to "cross the line" and become a Life Master, more so at a tournament (of any kind), and to have it happen at an NABC is *chef's kiss*.  Congratulations again to Kathy!  (And how fun must that plane ride back to Minnesota have been.)

LOCAL PLAYERS EXCELLING IN CANADA

A tip of the hat today to Kathleen Stadther [St Cloud] and Jan Gembol [Clear Lake], who won the two-session Gold Rush today!  They came in 1st place overall, with two outstanding games of 64.20% and 65.52%.  Kathy and Jan earned 12.34 gold points for their efforts today, which is awesome.  Lynne Castoldi [Minnetonka] and Aly El-Selehdar [Minnetonka] had a sparkling 65.23% morning session in the 0-10K Open Pairs, and that was enough to send them into tomorrow's final sessions.  Several Minnesota players increased their masterpoint haul at Toronto today and the updated list is on your left.

July 25 2024
IT'S THE HARDEST PART ABOUT BRIDGE
Friends and family that don't play the game of bridge frequently will ask "what's the hardest part about playing bridge?"  It can be many different things to different players; for some, it's counting all four suits as you play, or trying to defend when a situation appears hopeless.  But IMHO, the hardest thing about the game of bridge has nothing to do with the cards.  It's watching a partner of yours as they lose their edge over time - not playing as capably as they used to - making more and more mistakes that you know just isn't like them.  Bridge is such a cerebral game, it makes it easy to notice when one of your regular partners starts that downhill slope (which will surely come for pretty much all of us at some point).

Another Minnesota bridge player stopped playing this month.  Not because they're physically ill or infirmed; the game just got to be too frustrating.  This doesn't mean one can't offer to still play with them, or enjoy a game away from the bridge club (that's more informal or even party bridge) - but it's still disappointing to them and to everyone else.  And it's what some of us consider to be the hardest part about bridge.  (It's also why you should play as often as you can and with as many different partners as you can, while we're all still able to.)

2nd ANNUAL KORY SOLARZ KNOCKDOWN TOURNEY
Mark your calendar for Thursday, August 8th, for the 2nd Annual Kory Solarz Knockdown Tournament!  It's happening up in St Cloud on Thursday evening (the 8th) at 5:30pm at the St Cloud Labor Home (for directions to the Labor Home, click here).  Here is how Connie Nelson [Avon] describes the fun:
"What is 'knockdown' bridge?  It is nothing more than a team game with a few twists and add-ons.  First, the format is that of a traditional, non-bridge tourney——-winners play winners/losers play losers until only one winner is left standing, and one loser is alone at the bottom.

Players enter as a pair.  The teams are formed randomly the night of the event.  One pair is randomly drawn for each table.  (Teammates to be determined.)  The drawing then continues with a second pair randomly selected for each table.  The teams can determine which pair will play N/S——E/W.

The winning team has its members’ names memorialized on a permanent trophy and is awarded four gift cards, one for each player.  Among the losers, even that very last team need not despair.  There is a second set of gift cards awarded to the team lucky enough to succeed in a blind drawing.  It is not a random drawing.  The winners are eliminated from the drawing.  All other teams are assigned a designated colored set of marbles.  There are eight teams, so with the winners banished from this drawing, the second place team is allowed seven of its marbles in a bag, third place six marbles, all the way down to the last place team which is allowed one marble.  The bag is shaken and one marble is blindly extracted.  What ever the color, the team assigned that color gets the second set of gift cards.

The Kory Solarz Knockdown Bridge Tournament is a night of bridge played in the midst of some fun and frivolity."

    --Connie
This sounds like a GREAT time - and a fun way to celebrate Kory's legacy in regard to bridge across central Minnesota.

THINGS GO BETTER WITH KOCH
John Koch [St Cloud] has been writing about bridge hands for decades.  To help you at the table (whether it's bidding, declarer play, defense, anything, really) and edcuate while entertaining, we'll post one of his columns here every Thursday.

This week - do you play for the finesse or for the drop?  There might be a clue - or two clues.  Click on the image to the right or click here to check out what John has to say about it.

HOW MINNESOTANS ARE FARING

Almost three dozen Minnesota players have been taking part in the NABC this summer in Toronto.  Through today, they have earned more than 437 masterpoints!  (437.09, to be exact.)  Aydn Math [Northfield] entered the competition today, and promptly scored some gold points finishing 19th out of 84 pairs in today's Gold Rush.  (Games of 56.20% and 52.51% were not bad at all!)  Randy Okubo [St Paul] joined a foursome in the Top-Flight Swiss today, coming in 7th overall of 24 teams - good enough for another 9.84 gold points.  And Lance Chamberlain [Rochester] picked up a partner from Montreal, winning their section in the Open Pairs today with a 62.04% game.

One bit of unfortunate news from Toronto, though, with a reported COVID outbreak that took hold late last week.  It's not surprising, as any time you get 1,200 to 1,400 people together in such close quarters for each session of bridge, there are bound to be some COVID cases.  Here is hoping everyone weathers this with minor cases and quick recoveries.

Minnesota players and their masterpoint totals from this tournament are listed on your left - click on that image to open it in a new window.

AN ANNIVERSARY PARTY IN THE WORKS?
It will be one year next week since the Bridge Center of St Paul made its big move to their Roseville location.  This level of change for a club (and its players) rarely happens, and as you may recall, it was quite the big deal!  It's also the type of move that is fraught with unknowns; people in general (and especially at our age) don't like change.  The good news is that the move has been largely positive, both for players and for the club.

Looking at the eight-week period between the Gopher Regional in May and the week ending July 21st, the year-over-year indicators are all green at the BCSP.  Club games that are available to players average 8.13 per week now - which is up +25.4% from last year over the same eight-week period.  The average number of weekly tables at the club is also up, from 48.88 in 2023 to 61.31 this year (+20.4%); and that's introducing a lot of new games for novice players.  Finally, even with the smaller novice games included, the average tables per club game is also up. . .by +3.87% from 7.24 to 7.52.  (Open games alone are up +8.38%, from 8.46 tables per game last year to 9.17 here in 2024).

Now the fine print.  These statistics don't include any Unit 178-hosted Saturday games held at the BCSP Roseville location.  An adjustment was made for the four-day Aquatennial Tournament held this month (so as to keep everything consistent).  And even though tables are up +20.4% over last year, that's not an indication of the financial health of the club (for example, costs could be up +30.0%).  But overall, the picture that's painted by the move last year appears to be a win-win for the BCSP and its bridge players - and most would agree that calls for some cake and balloons next week.

DAY 7 AT THE NABC

More than two dozen Minnesota players are in Ontario, bidding, defending, and generally carousing at the Toronto NABC this week.  They're part of a very successful NABC, with tables through day 7 up +8.4% so far from last year's tournament in Chicago.

Rebecca Anspach [St Paul] and Deborah Weiss [Minneapolis] entered the Women's Pairs yesterday, coming in 10th our of 108 pairs to qualify for today's final.  They earned 3.43 platinum points!  The Central Minnesota contingent arrived in Toronto today, and promptly earned some gold points, with Theresa Kornwolf [Elk River], Nancy Balfanz [St Cloud], Kathleen Stadther [St Cloud] and Jan Gembol [Clear Lake] having a fun first day at the tournament.  Masterpoint totals (so far) for Minnesota players are listed to your left.

TORONTO - "AT THE HALF"
They're halfway through the big NABC in Toronto ON (remember, this is the one coming to Minneapolis in two years) - and table counts are up from last summer's NABC in Chicago. . .so far.  Below is a look at the total tables vs Chicago's 2023 NABC and 2022's Providence NABC.  And to the right of that, how the tables for each event are comparing to one year ago through the first six days.

Today's action saw Minnesota players Rebecca Anspach [St Paul] and Deborah Weiss [Minneapolis] enter the Women's Pairs; this event had 108 pairs enter.  Rebecca and Deborah finished up today in 10th place - and they clearly qualified to go on to tomorrow's final (well done!).  Masterpoint totals (so far) for Minnesota players are listed to your left.

DAY 5 AT THE SUMMER NABC

One Minnesota pair, Bob Schachter [Eden Prairie] and Paul Meerschaert [Long Lake] made it into finals of the Von Zedwitz Life Master Pairs at the NABC - and today they earned 28.50 platinum points, finishing 31st in the event (this 3-day contest started out with 286 pairs on Friday).  Today's Open Pairs saw Vern Swing [Minneapolis] and Deborah Weiss [Minneapolis] snaring a 62.33% game in the morning session, winning their 13-table section - also winning their afternoon section, and finishing with 22.31 points and 3rd overall.  Keith Connolly [St Paul] and Rebecca Anspach [St Paul] finished first in their section in the afternoon set of the Fast Pairs today with a 58.47% game.  And coming in 1st place in the Gold Rush Swiss today was the team which included Jackson and Sarah Wahl [Minneapolis] scoring another 8.82 gold points!  Sue Greenberg [Byron] got on a pickup team in the Mid-Flight Swiss to come in 19th out of 67 teams (not bad) for another 2.43 gold.  More than two dozen Minnesota players have gotten some scratch at Toronto - the latest masterpoint awards for Minnesota players are to your left.

CALLING ALL NON-LIFE MASTERS
It's time to start getting your partnerships together for the Bridge Center of St Paul's NLM tournament one month from now.  You may have heard "silver points are the hardest to get!", and here's a great opportunity to get some silver points playing in the comfort of your own club.

Click on the flyer to your right to expand it in a new window for printing or perusing.  See you in four weeks!

PLAYAHS PLAYIN'
While some Minnesota players are off to Toronto to have some fun at the NABC, players across our State continue to come out to the club - for club games and tournaments - in growing numbers.  Looking at the six-week average of in-person tables (both club F2F and tournaments), that number is up +14.5% compared to last year at this time.  Remember - this is the middle of summer!  And while there are other things to do (no question), at the moment Minnesota players are playing bridge - and in greater numbers than last year.  This rolling average, compared to 52 weeks prior, has been in the positive range every week since the reopening of bridge clubs in 2021.

MINNESOTA PLAYERS DOWN SOUTH - DAY 4

(Here's an alert[!] that the Toronto NABC playing area is exactly 9.8 miles south of the Minnesota/Iowa state line.)  1 Saturday over at the summer NABC saw more Minnesota players in action - with more success stories to be had.

Sue Greenberg [Byron] picked up a player from Stoney Creek, Ontario, and won her section in the morning session of the Open Pairs today.  Also among the 53 tables of the Open Pairs today was Warren Nelson [Cloquet] and Larry Uttley [Duluth], who came in 7th overall in that event.  And Margaret Getman [St Paul] came in 2nd in her bracket of the Bracketed Swiss here on day 4.  PLUS - Jackson Wahl [Minneapolis] and Sarah Wahl [Minneapolis] are playing three sessions a day.  Oh, to be young again!  Latest Minnesota masterpoint awards are to your left.

AUGUST CLUB CALENDARS
It's not too early to be thinking about August club play, and here are those clubs who have issued their calendar for next month.  August is the final month of the club qualifying for the North American Pairs, and there are still many NAP games yet to be played - plus the Non-Life Master Sectional at the Bridge Center of St Paul is coming up the 3rd week of the month.  Click on any calendar to enlarge it and open in a new window.

TORONTO - DAY 3

1 Friday at the NABC brought an end to the D14 GNT Flight C team's quest, but congratulations are in order for all these GNT teams for earning the opportunity to play at the NABC.  This would be the second day of full-scheduled events, and 19 Minnesota players now have earned ~160 masterpoints.  With more to come!

MINNESOTANS ALREADY SCORING SOME SCRATCH
It's really been just one day of play at the Toronto NABC, but already Minnesota players are earning some masterpoints.  Overall tables for the opening day of play are up from last year (and 2022), and playing Minnesotans are also part of that good news.

A PHOENIX IN TORONTO
"Sometimes you're the windshield, and sometimes you're the bug."  It applies to all of us, excellent bridge players and novice players alike and everything in-between.  Some days, nothing seems to go right, and whereas the game of bridge should be entertaining and should be fun - occasionally you have just one of those days.

It happens to everyone, and it happened to the Minnesota team representing D14 in the Flight A GNT competition in Toronto.  Eight matches on Wednesday, winning zero of them, and a finish that could only have been better.

But like a phoenix rising from the ashes, these four players entered another team event not 24 hours later, and came in 2nd among their bracket.  Playing in bracket #2, and earning 12.20 gold points Thursday, winning four of the six matches, it was a much better day at the bridge table for Larry Uttley [Duluth], Warren Nelson [Cloquet], Bill Voedisch [Marine], and Dennis Cerkvenik [Minnetonka].  Getting back up off the ice and skating again can be the best remedy (ok, yes, enough with the metaphors already) and the lesson for everyone else here is to not let a bad game (or a bad day) of bridge get you down.  Especially for newer players at the table, a bad day can shake your confidence.  Don't let it.  There's more fun to be had, and you won't want to miss it.

July 18 2024
DAY 2 AT THE TORONTO NABC - UPDATE
Day 2 gets underway in Toronto this morning; in addition to the second day of the GNT Finals, Minnesota players will be arriving to play in everything else that's offered.  One thing to watch today will be the Championship Flight of the D14 GNT, where that team of Minnesota players is playing D2's team - all of whom live in Toronto!  Hopefully "home field advantage" means nothing here.

Results on your right as they come in today.

UPDATE:  And then there was one!  Two out of the remaining three D14 GNT teams fell out of the competition in today's Round of 16, with the Connolly Championship Flight and Lasoff Flight B foursome bowing out (scores to the right).  The Wahl Flight C team, however, was victorious in their match and will go on to the quarterfinal matches tomorrow.  It turns out two of the four players on the Flight C team were not able to play the entire five days (should it go that far) - so this team asked a couple of Iowans (David Nelmark [Urbandale] and Rhonda McCoy [West Des Moines]) to fill out their roster.  Here is an update from Jackson Wahl [Minneapolis]:
"We had a pretty smooth match against a very nice team from Little Rock.  The [qualifying] Swiss was a little rocky, we had plenty of close matches against the stronger teams in the event, but I'm glad we're in the top half of the bracket.  Next match we'll play a team from Chicago we faced off against in the Swiss - a +18 [IMPs] result, so we hope to hold our own!  Four of our six players are playing with screens for the first time."
Sounds like they are having fun (which is the best possible outcome).

D14's ALL-MINNESOTA NABC GNT RESULTS
Here is a look at how the all-Minnesota squads of D14's Grand National Teams did in their first day of competition at the NABC in Toronto this week.  It was tough sledding for all the D14 teams - but three of the four D14 teams have done well enough to advance to the next round.

Some wild stories from the first day in Toronto, with the D14 GNT Championship team laying low (22nd of 23 teams) until round 6 of 8.  They crushed round 6 to win by 49 IMPs, then won round 7 by 9 IMPs.  Then on the bubble for the last round as they were in 16th place (with 16 teams advancing), before winning that last match by 11 IMPs.  The Flight "A" squad had a tougher time, unable to win any of their eight matches.  Flight "B"'s GNT team fell to 19th place after the first four matches today, but came storming back with a couple of big wins (+27 and +19 IMPs) and winning three of the last four to finish in 9th place.  And the Flight "C" team started out very strong - 3rd after 3 matches - and held on to finish in 7th place and advance to tomorrow.

Here are their results from day 1 and position of finish (the top 16 teams in each flight go on to play tomorrow):

MINNESOTA TABLES OVERALL: ON THE RISE
Have a look at how bridge is going across Minnesota during the first six months of the year.  Tables are broken down by tournaments, online virtual club games, in-person face-to-face games, and the combined total of these divisions.

When compared to the first six months of last year, overall tables are up - by +2.9%.  An extra tournament has helped tournament tables jump +16.0% during the first half of the year, and face-to-face tables at your local club have soared by 20.5% compared to 2023.  As is the trend nationally, virtual club games and their table counts have really fallen off since last year. . .with Minnesota BBO VACB tables off -69.6%.  There may be a few virtual players that have not yet made the jump back to your local club, but judging by the comparative F2F table counts, there are not many of them left.

SUMMER NABC UNDERWAY TOMORROW
Dozens of Minnesota bridge players will be taking part in this summer's NABC over in Toronto starting tomorrow.  (Trivia: The Toronto playing site is 9.8 miles south of the Minnesota/Iowa state line.)  Everything kicks off with the Grand National Teams play on Wednesday, and this year all four D14 teams are composed entirely of Minnesota players.  Here is who we will be watching as things get underway:
    D14 CHAMPIONSHIP FLIGHT:
Keith Connolly [St Paul], Vern Swing [Minneapolis], Paul Meerschaert [Long Lake], and Bob Schachter [Eden Prairie]

    D14 FLIGHT "A" TEAM:
Larry Uttley [Duluth], Bill Voedisch [Marine], Warren Nelson [Cloquet], and Dennis Cerkvenik [Minnetonka]

    D14 FLIGHT "B" TEAM:
Mark Lasoff [Minneapolis], David Trevor [Bloomington], David Goodrie [Plymouth], and David Neiman [Minneapolis]

    D14 FLIGHT "C" TEAM:
Chris Westermeyer [Falcon Heights], Ross Anderson [Woodbury], Sarah Wahl [Minneapolis], and Jackson Wahl [Minneapolis]
Best of luck to all Minnesota players at the NABC!

A QUICK UPDATE ON THE NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS
Six weeks down in the North American Pairs qualifying stage and six weeks to go - so where are we?  443 Minnesota players have already qualified to go on in the NAP competition past August 31st!  This includes 203 Flight "C" players, which is hard to believe - another 179 players have qualified for the Flight "B" competition, and 61 Flight "A" players have qualified.  It's a terrific crowd.  (Of course, not all 443 players will show up at the Bridge Center of St Paul's NAP Unit Final on September 21st, right?  Having 110 tables in play there could be a bit tight.)

AQUATENNIAL TOURNAMENT CHAMPION CROWNED
Congratulations to Keith Connolly [St Paul], your 2024 Aquatennial Sectional Tournament Champion!  Keith earned 8.73 masterpoints on the final day of the tournament (and 32.28 over the four day event), to come in tops in what was a very tough (and as always, competitive) crowd.  This is the 1st time Keith has topped the leaderboard as an Aquatennial Sectional Tournament Champion, joining a list of some very impressive players (see the list of previous champions to your right).

While on the topic of impressive, the turnout for this year's Aquatennial Sectional over at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Roseville location finished up with a table count of 201.5.  That is pretty much in line with both the post-COVID world of the Aquatennial Sectional as well as overall tables in the past 20 years.  (The 20-year average table count for this tournament is 51.68 tables per day.) The chart to your left shows how this year's tournament's tables per day stacks up compared to the past 20 years of the Aquatennial.

ONE DAY TO GO AT THE AQUATENNIAL
There's just one day yet to go at the Aquatennial Sectional in Roseville; and the quest for the title of Tournament Champion is coming down to the last session tomorrow.  Bob Balderson [Eden Prairie] has the lead through three days; will he hang on to win his third Aquatennial crown?  Or will Terry Beckman [Brooklyn Park] who's tied for 2nd right now come back to win his fourth such title?  Or will we have someone completely new to list on the trophy!?

Stay tuned.  We will know tomorrow evening.  For now - you can check out the Top 20 masterpoint leaders (so far) on the right.

WHERE HARD WORK AND SACRIFICE MUST PAY OFF
Everyone's time is valuable - and consequently, mentoring isn't for everyone.  (Although maybe it should be.)  And working hard to educate students of the game through classes and chat bridge is hard work.  It requires volunteerism and sacrifice - plus there's no guarantee that novice players will stick with it.  But that may be the only way to get a payoff (now and down the road).

The Aquatennial Sectional tournament underway is seeing terrific crowds - that's great news of course.  But there is work to do with the Non-Life Master players, where this year's NLM tables are the smallest part of the tournament's bridge crowd in at least 15 years.  The chart to the right shows the percentage of NLM tables compared to the total tournament tables for the first three days of the Aquatennial since 2009.  The trend is not tough to spot; but this is a trend that can (read: must) be reversed at some point.  (Of course this issue is not limited to this tournament alone.)

Get involved with your local club's mentor/mentee program - or work with your Unit to create I/N events that have that party atmosphere.  It can be done - here's one example:  Unit 103's NAP Flight "C" efforts this year have produced 32.5 Flight "C" tables so far this summer.  That's an increase of +140.7% from last year at this time (when there were 13.5 Flight "C" tables in play).  Will this translate to greater NAP Flight "C" participation down the road?  Maybe.  But without this effort, the answer to that question would be an easy "no".  Do what you can for our beginner players - encourage I/N players when you see them at the table - and if nothing else, maybe make a tax-deductible contribution to the Minnesota Education Fund (our local group that does such fantastic work).  We're all in it together.

NEW NAP + GNT CATEGORIES VOTE NEXT WEEK
One of the fastest growing groups in bridge is mid-flight players.  That includes Minnesota's bridge players of course, and next week the ACBL Board of Directors will entertain motions to encourage mid-flight players to get involved in the North American Pairs and Grand National Teams.

At the NABC in Toronto next week, the BOD meets and will vote on motions 2 and 3, which establish new categories for competition in the NAP and GNT.  These new masterpoint categories will be as follows:
    UNLIMITED ("Open")
    0-6000 (Flight "A")
    0-3500 (Flight "B")
    0-750 (Flight "C")

The increase in flight B and C masterpoint levels is to try and increase player particiation.  These motions have been submitted by Dennis Carman [Chicago], who is our Region 5 President.  When the votes gets taken, you'll see the results here (the BOD report is not public until after the conclusion of their meetings on the 17th).  NOTE that the new categories would be in effect for this coming year's GNT program, but would not be enacted for the NAP until June 1, 2025.  If you'd like to read the motions for yourself, click here or on the image to your upper right.

ONE BOTTOM DOES NOT RUIN A GOOD GAME
Day 1 at the Aquatennial Sectional in Roseville had a terrific turnout - 55 tables on day 1.  That's the highest number of tables for the first day of the Aquatennial in the post-COVID era.  You can check out the scores and results of today's action by clicking here.

But there always seems to be one bad board in a good game, and today's crowd - while impressive - does have one thing to keep an eye on.  Today's action included 7.5 I/N tables, which is the lowest turnout of I/N players since 2013 on day 1 of this tournament.  The I/N tables today accounted for 12.0% of the opening day tables in Roseville, and that is the lowest percentage of I/N participation in the overall table count on day 1 over the past 15 years.  There's plenty of this tournament yet to go (the schedule is here if you aren't already booked) - but hopefully we will see an uptick in these I/N players later this week as they are our future.

AQUATENNIAL TOURNAMENT THROUGH THE YEARS
Kicking off today and operating through Saturday, it's Unit 178's Aquatennial Tournament.  For the first time, it's being held across the river in St Paul, and prior to the COVID shutdown, this tournament was five days long.  (It also has been known to have included an evening session or two.)  Because it has varied over the years between three and five days in length, it might be better to look at the tables per day of the tournament rather than just total tables.  That's the chart below in green.  Tables per day of the Aquatennial have been remarkably steady over the past 15 years (NOTE that we're using the "Summer Sizzlin" Sectional in 2022 for comparison purposes here, as it was the only summer Unit 178 tournament that year).

When looking at the I/N tables per day of the tournament (when those I/N games have been offered), there has been a bit of a dropoff since the pre-COVID years - but hopefully that will turn around starting this week.

ONE OTHER THING ABOUT THE ROYAL STAC
These "Royal STaCs" are not just for the bridge royalty in Minnesota - they're for everyone.  Both the Bridge Center of St Paul's Sunday mentor/mentee game, along with Rochester's mentor/mentee game on Tuesday were part of this month's Royal STaC.  That means Minnesota bridge players with very few masterpoints have a terrific opportunity to get some multi-pigmented points when these STaCs take place.  Just ask Arthur Boylan [Edina], who came into the month with less than 15 masterpoints. . .but scored 2.55 multi-pigmented points in St Paul's mentor/mentee game Sunday with his partner, Larry McIntyre [St Paul].  Mentor/mentee games are a great way to learn bridge from the mentee side - and a terrific way to give back as well as expand our pool of players from the mentor side.  Check with the Bridge Center of St Paul or Rochester if you'd like to play in one of these, and if your club doesn't run one, ask them about it.

THE AQUATENNIAL COMES TO ST PAUL
With the 4th of July in the rearview mirror, summer (and summer activities) is about to kick into gear.  Although the official Minneapolis Aquatennial won't get going until July 24th, you can get into the spirit of summer by playing in this week's Unit 178 Aquatennial Sectional Tournament.  For 2024, the tournament is being held this year over at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Roseville location starting on Wednesday.  The flyer is just to your right (click on it to enlarge and view in a new window).  Friday's charity games are for extra masterpoints, and all donations (Friday and throughout the four-day tournament) will benefit Second Harvest.  And talk about the weather cooperating for this bridge-o-rama!  The weather forecast inside is for air-conditioned comfort with scattered singletons and voids, but no chance of mosquitoes.  Perfect for playing cards.

MASTERPOINTS - AT THE HALF
Believe it or not, you're well into the second half of 2024.  With six months of earning masterpoints down, and just six months to go for our local masterpoint races, you may hope to be in contention.  We just got the ACBL's data for Units 103 and 178, and it's posted below.  Records here are through June 30th, and include Mini-McKenneys, the Ace of Clubs, the Virtual Ace of Clubs, the Barry Crane 500 Race, the YTD masterpoint leaders, all-time Unit leaders, etc., etc.  Click on either of the images to your left to open that file in a new window - see if you're in the top 5 of any category - and then start catching up at your local club!

THE LATEST ON EDGAR
EDGAR is the ACBL's computer program being used to detect players who appear to be cheating.  Here is the latest on the ACBL's efforts to update the Code of Disciplinary Regulations (CDR) and help protect the game that we love, as related by Jonathan Steinberg:
"As is often the case with system rollouts, some unforeseen issues and lessons learned from the initial EDGAR roll-out resulted in a need to update the CDR.  Several informal meetings were held and attended by both Board Members and Management where concerns were voiced and solutions agreed upon.  This process culminated in a formal May 8 Special BOD Meeting, when a number of revisions to the Code of Disciplinary Regulations (CDR) were approved.   The key changes to the CDR include:
         • Discipline is now based on each player’s Masterpoint® (MP) holding.
         • Only Unit/District Officers (Pres., VP, Sec’y, Treasurer, District Recorder) will be subjected to “Heightened Scrutiny” (HS) and the stronger penalties that accompany it.  In the Feb 2, 2024, CDR, all Unit/District BOD members were already included in HS.
        • Players subject to Fast Track Discipline (FTD) will be prohibited from playing with the partner(s) they cheated with during their probation.
        • Players who cheated with multiple partners will get lengthier suspensions than those who only cheated with one.
        • Pairs who have previously been found responsible for a first-degree ethical violation (collusive cheating) will be given a Suspension Pending Hearing if identified by EDGAR as cheating again.

On May 8, we also voted to:
         • Retroactively modify discipline for players who would have received FTD discipline but could not because of their partner’s MP level—in the previous version of the CDR, players’ disciplines were adjusted based on their partner’s status (e.g., more Masterpoints, subject to HS) that made that partner ineligible for FTD.  This was approved to be consistent with the disciplines that will be given moving forward.
         • Allow players on suspension to perform volunteer work for the Unit or District.  This will not allow anything prohibited for “Members Not in Good Standing,” such as serving on a Board or being present during a tournament or club game.  It will allow activities such as: scheduling, making flyers, reviewing and editing documents, helping off-site with hospitality planning and preparation, and helping repair of equipment.  This may help keep them engaged with the bridge community, especially for those receiving short suspensions (e.g., 3-6 months) and short probations (e.g., 6-12 months).

Finally, we made the following agreements with Management/Office of the National Recorder (ONR):
        • We will continue to screen from 2020-on.
        • While those players/pairs identified as “Red” by EDGAR are deemed to be cheating “Beyond a Reasonable Doubt,” a “Yellow” assessment from EDGAR means they are “very likely cheating.”  All “Reds” must be charged.
         • “Yellow” pairs must be fully investigated by the ONR.
        • “Stripe” is an indication of possible asymmetrical cheating.  If one player is identified as “Red,” they must be charged.  The ONR is required to investigate the partner to determine whether they were complicit.  If the charge is determined to be collusive cheating, the ONR must charge the partner as well.
         • Completion of the Ethics Certification and signing the Fair Play Pledge, formerly required of all who received FTD, will now be required for all those who agree to a Negotiation Resolution."

MINNESOTA'S ROYAL STAC RESULTS
LATEST UPDATE:  Monday morning.  One game (Saturday morning's at the Bridge Center of St Paul) has not yet been thrown into the ACBL hopper, but your list to the left details the 230 Minnesota players who earned some multi-pigmented points in this weeks STaC.  Also on the left is your "top 15", which includes the undisputed King of the Royal STaC - that's Steve Gaynor [Inver Grove Heights] who picked up 15.41 masterpoints this week.  (That's 3.85 of every color.)  For the overall awards for each individual daypart through the week, click here.
